J.S. Bach - Prelude, Loure, and Gavotte en Rondeau from Suite in E major BWV 1006
Prelude 0:00, 4:08 Loure, 7:57 Gavotte en Rondeau
Here are the first three movement of Bach's incredible Partita for Solo Violin, BWV 1006, also known as the 4th Lute Suite BWV 1006a. This is one of three Suites I'm preparing right now for my 7-string Bach album.
The Prelude is a piece I've visited for the past 25 years at least, since hearing Gordon O'Brien (Canadian guitar legend) play it in concert as an encore. Originally, I struggled to play it in standard tuning, so I decided to tune the 3rd string down to f#. In my opinion, the alternate tuning really helps to get through the piece without totally burning out your left hand. Now, it is one of my favourite pieces to play, and I play ...

Giulio Regondi - Etudes no. 1 & 6

Etude no. 1 in C - 0:00, Etude no 6 in D minor 3:13 I recently went to the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University to record and showcase a number of works contained in the incredible Ophee Collection, recently acquired by the University. Perhaps the crowning jewel of the Ophee collection is the only known manuscript of Regondi's ten etudes. Unfortunately, the manuscript isn't in ...

0:00 Adagio, 3:25 Fuga, 8:23 Siciliana, 11:29 Presto I'm happy to share my arrangement of Bach's masterpiece, BWV 1001. The sheet music (tab notation combo) here! www.classicalguitarist.ca/publications This is perhaps my favourite of his solo instrumental sonatas, and like all Bach, the more you play it, the more it reveals to you. J.S. Bach - Prelude from Partita no. 1, BWV 825 feat. Simon Farintosh (8-string)

Here is the first video in a series of collaborations I'll be making with friends and colleagues. I wonder who will show up ;) Partita no. 1 is actually something guitarists such as Tilman Hoppstock and David Russell are playing on solo guitar, however, I think it also works as a very manageable duet piece which is fun to play! I feel that the low notes on the 8-string really help add weight es...

A friendly reminder to please obliterate the Subscribe button, I'm shooting for 100K! One of Schubert's most famous lied, Ständchen (Serenade) is found in the posthumously published song cycle Schwanengesang. The song is converted here into a literal "song without words" by J.K Mertz, who undoubtedly got his inspiration from Liszt's arrangement for solo piano. The guitar I am playing is a sort ...
Isaac Albéniz - Torre Bermeja

From 12 Piezas características, Op.92, originally for piano. Torre Bermeja translates to the "vermilion tower", and has been a classical guitar standard along with many other Albéniz transcriptions since the days of Tárrega and Llobet. Surprisingly, the first time I heard this piece was not on a Segovia album, but on Canadian television where Norbert Kraft performed it after an interview. I fee...

Sheet music (for 6 and 7-string) available here: classicalguitarist.ca/publications This arrangement is based on Tárrega's, but I decided to do away with the octave shifts and cadenza, instead honouring the simplicity and humble quality of the original. Also, like the Raindrop Prelude, I decided to honour the original key and tune the whole guitar down a 1/2 step. The guitar was a little buzzy ...

Played on a 7-string Romantic guitar by Mark Usherovich. I've seen a few pieces in the core repertoire that use a low D and E, indicating a 7-string was used. The Elegy by Mertz is one that comes to mind. This guitar has a very interesting design, where you can place the 7th string above the neck (as a fretted string) or off the neck (which adds some length to the string and resonance). I reall...

Free sheet music! classicalguitarist.ca/publications Of all the Paganini caprices, the 20th seems to be the easiest to adapt to the classical guitar. Even though I was just overwhelmed by BWV1001's performance, another historic performance was added. These are blissful days for someone like me who loves Bach's music. The characteristics of the maestro's performance include the clear separation of each note, the outstanding beauty of ornaments such as cross-string trills and mordents, and the skill with which he handles contrapuntal voices. However, I think the most appealing thing about him is that he expresses the joy of music in an extremely restrained and rational way, while refraining from making exaggerated gestures. I would like to express my gratitude for the good fortune of being born at the same time as the maestro.

The beauty of Bach's music is that you can innovate on it without transforming it into a whole different piece. This recording to me, is superior to the previous one of the Prelude When I get to a certain level, I'll try tuning the 3rd to an F#, if that would make the piece less stressing to play 😅

It's a LaCote body with a Stauffer headstock and the fretboard can accommodate the 7th string if you wish. A total Frankenguitar. I think it's a 50 or 51 mm nut, but for 7 strings. It feels good though, I've tried a lot of Romantic guitars where the nut is so narrow it's difficult to play.

What a way to understand and feel the third Partiata! There is already so much depth in Bach's music and in a lesser but still significant degree in your playing of it, that now, after listening to you, I can no longer see a transcription like this as something containing any "additions" to Bach's original music, but rather as an laying out of a possibility already conceived By Bach and already contained within the original score. Your musical understanding and artistic vision is quite obvious, and I am amazed by the talent that you have been given from above. You did not only find a working and convincing interpretation of the voices in Bach's original violin music, but also of the additional bass lines and middle voices, which you have played with a right amount of clarity. They give the main melody a much more definite meaning, so they are bold in nature, but of course one does not want to overstate them, as the stage belongs more to the higher voices. The musical phrases in your performance are as natural as verbal phrases in a conversation. A great performance of a thoughtful interpretation, thank you for sharing it with us! Also, a great instrument for Bach, my favourite measures were probably 10:18. The registers are similar enough for phrasing arpeggios and horizontally wide ranging phrases, but also different enough for shading and contrasting the different voices. I wish you all the best for your personal life and your musical career!
